The Southern African Grain Milling Academy (SAGMA), the Skills Development Department of NCM, was proud to participate in the Advancing Value-Chain Quality Apprenticeships in South Africa roundtable, joining industry leaders, skills development partners, and training experts in a collective effort to strengthen and govern quality apprenticeship programmes across the country.
As the custodian of milling training and development in South Africa, SAGMA recognises that well-structured, industry-aligned apprenticeships are essential for developing the scarce and critical skills needed within the grain milling sector. Through collaboration with employers, training providers, and industry stakeholders, we are committed to ensuring that Miller Apprentices receive the knowledge, practical experience, and professional support required to become the next generation of skilled millers.
The discussions highlighted the importance of quality assurance, workplace-based learning, mentorship, and sustainable partnerships that create meaningful pathways into employment. For the milling industry, these initiatives play a vital role in building a competent workforce capable of supporting food production, food quality, and long-term food security.
By investing in apprentice development today, we are not only addressing critical skills shortages but also safeguarding the future of South Africa’s food value chain. SAGMA remains committed to advancing excellence in milling education and strengthening apprenticeship pathways that contribute to economic growth, youth employment, and sustainable food security for generations to come.
Together, we are shaping the future of milling, developing scarce and critical skills, and ensuring a sustainable food supply for South Africa.
